Having both heating and lighting in one device can make it easier to set up and look better. It also makes choosing the right LED more difficult. Unlike a light fixture an LED module placed inside an infrared heater can face higher temperatures and not much air flow.

The light needs to fit in the space that’s available. It also needs to give light. It has to be safe when it comes to electricity. It must protect against the environment it’s, in. Manufacturers who design outdoor heating devices must choose a COB LED that is more than just a wattage or light output comparison. The entire lighting assembly, including the COB LED must be examined in the conditions where it will actually work.

1. Check the Temperature Requirements First

Temperature is an important factor when choosing an LED module for an infrared heater. The ambient temperature around the LED assembly can rise a lot when the heater runs. The exact temperature depends on how the heater’s built, its insulation, how it is ventilated how far, apart the parts are and the conditions under which it operates.

When reviewing a COB LED datasheet it is important to distinguish between temperature (Ta) and case temperature (Tc). Ambient temperature (Ta) refers to the surrounding air temperature under the specified measurement conditions. Case temperature (Tc) refers to the temperature at a defined point on the component case. These values are not interchangeable. A module rated for a particular case temperature (Tc) cannot automatically be considered suitable, for the ambient temperature (Ta).

If the application requires continuous operation at 95°C or 105°C ambient temperature, confirm that the complete LED assembly is rated for those conditions. The driver, capacitors, solder joints, optical cover, seals and other components may set temperature limits, than the temperature limits set by the LED emitter itself. High temperature suitability should therefore be verified through manufacturer specifications and testing of the assembled product.

2. Consider the Complete LED Assembly, Not Just the COB

A COB LED can give an efficient light source.Just the COB package by itself might not be enough for an outdoor heater. To work well a full lighting setup may have to include the COB LED light source, a driver that is either built in or added externally a way to pull heat away a cover or lens to protect the light and proper electrical insulation along, with ways to mount it securely.

For ceiling-mounted equipment the available installation space may be limited to about 90 mm in diameter and 30 mm in depth. The 90 mm and 30 mm dimensions should be treated as design targets, than universal limits.

An integrated driver can simplify wiring and reduce the number of separate components. However, a driver-on-board (DOB) design must be evaluated carefully because its electronic components are also exposed to heat generated by the heater and the LED system. An external driver can give you flexibility in component placement but only if the product design gives enough space and proper protection. The best way to set up the driver depends on the overall structure, the temperature conditions and the electrical requirements of the heating equipment.

3. Match the Electrical and Lighting Specifications

Before choosing a COB LED make sure you know the supply and the amount of light you need. For example a project might need white light that is 3000K and at least 500 lumens. The COB LED you pick should be compared to these needs using test results from the module instead of just looking at the stated wattage.

The key specifications include input voltage, measured luminous flux, color temperature, switching control, and electrical safety. Confirm compatibility with the intended supply, such as 120 VAC, 230 VAC, or a supported 90–264 VAC range. If only ON/OFF operation is required, avoid adding unnecessary dimming functions. Check the insulation, protection, and certification requirements applicable to the finished product and its destination market.

A product should not be thought to work with a range of input voltages unless that is clearly stated. Also an AC COB module that has a driver built in needs to be checked for safety and how well it handles heat as a whole unit.

4. Evaluate Outdoor Protection and Service Life

Outdoor heating equipment can get wet from rain damp from moisture dusty, from dust and can face cold changes. The level of protection that Outdoor heating equipment needs depends on where Outdoor heating equipment will be installed and on the conditions that the lighting assembly will experience.

A bare COB module is not equivalent to a sealed lighting product. If the application needs protection from water you must look at the housing the lens, the cable entries, the seals and how everything fits together. All these parts should be considered as a unit. The IP rating must be checked for the assembly and it should meet the test conditions that apply IPX5, for example, relates to protection against water jets; it does not by itself establish resistance to every form of outdoor exposure.

Service life also requires careful evaluation. A claimed operating life of 5,000 hours at elevated ambient temperature should be supported by relevant product specifications or test evidence. The temperature limits of the driver and other electronic components must also be considered. Where possible, test the complete lighting assembly inside the heater under representative operating conditions. This provides more useful information than evaluating the LED package in isolation.

5. Standard Products or Custom COB LED Solutions?

For manufacturers planning production volumes of several thousand units per year, an existing standard module is often the best starting point. This can cut down the development time. Might save extra tooling costs. Still a standard product is a fit when it satisfies the key needs of temperature, dimensions, light output, electrical compatibility and environmental protection. If no existing product satisfies these requirements a customized solution may be necessary.Customization could involve the substrate, driver configuration, mounting structure, housing, or optical cover.

Before committing to a design request the datasheet. Also ask for drawings, measured luminous flux, temperature ratings, available certifications, sample lead time and production pricing. For high-temperature applications, also request evidence supporting the claimed operating life. Sample testing should take place before finalizing the design for mass production.

Conclusion

Selecting a COB LED for compact outdoor heating equipment requires a system-level approach. Temperature ratings, driver configuration, installation dimensions, optical performance, and outdoor protection must all be considered together. A standard COB or DOB module may be sufficient when its specifications match the application. High ambient temperatures and limited installation space can create limits. In that case a complete custom LED assembly might be a choice. The reliable choice is the one that has verified specifications. The reliable choice also has tests that were done in realistic operating conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a standard AC COB LED be installed directly inside an infrared heater?

Not necessarily.
